SINGAPORE, Jan 5 (Reuters)Perennial Real Estate, a firm set up by former CapitaLand retail chief Pua Seck Guan, has hired Goldman Sachs , DBS and Standard Chartered to help it raise as much as S$1 billion ($777 million) in a property trust IPO, sources with knowledge of the deal said on Wednesday.

Perennial intends to list a business trust in Singapore that will comprise mostly shopping malls in China, said the sources, who declined to be named because the matter has not been made public.

Pre-marketing of the deal is scheduled to begin later this month with the formal launch of the initial public offering slated for the end of March, the sources added.

A spokeswoman for Perennial, which is involved in the development and management of malls as well as property funds, said the firm had businesses in China, India and Singapore and it "continues to explore opportunties in these markets".

The three banks either declined comment or could not be reached.

Under Singapore law, a real estate investment trust (REIT) faces restrictions on its level of borrowings and is obliged to distribute at least 90 percent of its income.

By putting its assets in a business trust, Perennial has greater scope to invest in properties under development and retains the flexibility of paying out a smaller portion of rental income to shareholders, two of the sources said.

Pua, who is widely credited with building CapitaLand's malls business, resigned from Southeast Asia's biggest developer in September 2008, sparking a 7 percent fall in the firm's share price.

His firm is currently leading the re-development of three commercial properties in Singapore and backers of his unlisted China funds include Beijing Hualian Group.



Besides China and Singapore, Singapore-based Perennial, whose management includes several former CapitaLand executives, is also active in India where it advises property giant DLF on the retail business.

Based on the indicative timeline, Perennial's IPO will come to market around the same time as Mapletree Commercial Trust, which plans to raise over $1 billion through a REIT IPO in Singapore.

Mapletree Commercial Trust, whose assets include Vivocity, Singapore's largest mall, is managed by Mapletree Investments, a wholly owned unit of state investor Temasek .

DBS and Goldman Sachs are also on the Mapletree deal, along with Citigroup and Deutsche Bank. ($1 = 1.287 Singapore Dollars) (Reporting by Kevin Lim and Daniel Stanton)

Red Flags That a Man is a Pick-Up Artist

Many techniques to seducing a woman are discussed in Neil Strauss's book The Game [2005 HarberCollins]. These tactics turn seduction into an art (hence the phrase "pick-up artist"), and many of them are in the form of routines, strategies, and memorized lines.

Peacock Theory

Leaders of pick-up artist seminars form their theories a number of ways. Some study hypnosis or sexual psychology, and some just start from scratch, observing what does and does not seduce a woman. Two theories developed by the pick up artist known as "Mystery" are called Peacock Theory and Cat-String Theory.

Peacock Theory (Strauss, 22, 2005), taken from the brightly colored animal, posits that women are attracted to chic and brightly ornamented men. Thus, rings, necklaces, silk shirts, and other accessories will attract them. The theory branches off into other arenas, like personality. Pick-up artists, especially of Mystery's following, smile when entering a room and make it a point to become the center of attention in the group where the desired woman is present.

Cat-String Theory

Cat-String Theory (33) compares a man and woman to a string and cat. Strauss quotes Mystery, saying "when the string is dangling above its head, just out of reach, the cat goes crazy trying to get it. It leaps in the air, dances around, and chases it all over the room. But as soon as you let go of the string and it drops right between the cat's paws, it just looks at the string for a second and then walks away. It's bored. It doesn't want it anymore."

The philosophy has spawned tactics such as the "neg," which is a cross between an insult and a compliment (20). The compliment part shows interest, but the insult part shows that the woman will have to work to gain the approval of the man. An example might be "you're hair would really look better up/down," or "that dress really doesn't do justice to your figure."

Not Compromising

Some pick-up artists will not be satisfied not getting what they want. A "freeze-out," for example, is when the man ruins an atmosphere that has become intimate because the woman will not go as far as he wants (216-218). This could include turning lights on or opening a laptop and checking email. The idea is to make her feel that she can't have an intimate time under her own conditions, and must submit to the man's desires if she wants to have any intimate connection.



Pick-up artists function through manipulation and maintaining the emotional power in an interaction. If a woman does not want to be the victim of a pick-up, all she needs to do is recognize seduction tactics and not compromise her power (or simply ignore the seducer).

You simply have that gut feeling that something is off. Once you are sufficiently attached to your narcissist and you want to move the relationship forward, you'll find them actually pushing you away. Thus starts the rollercoaster ride of the hot/cold phase in the relationship......further confounding your experience. That's because intimacy scares a narcissist, as it makes them feel controlled. When you speak up about this, they start to engage in all kinds of cruel behaviors that are meant to hurt you, of which the silent treatment or disappearing acts and the triangulation are the most devastating. Gradually you realize you are consistently being devalued and you feel on edge most of the time. The mind games actively undermine the relationship and the development of any kind of trust.......the sense of safety and security in the relationship. The narcissist even appears amused at what he is doing to you.

Narcissists always seem to have an excuse for why they can't give themselves fully to the relationship. They may say they have hardships they have to resolve first, but you find they never resolve them. Often you see narcissists being better at long distance relationships, because a real relationship is perceived as an inconvenience to them. Or the narcissist prefers being doted on by a married woman, since he won't have the inconvenience of a real relationship.

All along they've been rather secretive about their past relationship history. As your relationship continues into a long term relationship, narcissists will start to make veiled threats, with statements like: "my relationships have never lasted more than two or three years." This is meant to intentionally heighten the insecurity you feel about your relationship with him. Narcissists like that sense of power and control it gives them. Instead of the relationship moving forward, it seems to actually be sliding backward. You will find yourself to be the only one making an effort to keep the relationship going. At this point you are starting to see that your relationship is only a side note to them, leaving you in perpetual waiting mode.

The narcissist uses you as an accessory, and you realize the relationship is a one-way street. They expect you to be there for them 100% to the point where you've become isolated from family and friends. The narcissist will exploit you to help them, but they are never there for you. Incredibly, the narcissist will start to become more and more secretive about their plans as time goes on. By now, it's become super confusing why you haven't been able to bond deeper, as would be the case in a healthy relationship. The relationship feels extremely shallow and superficial. With the narcissist being so wrapped up with himself, there simply is no room for you in their life. You repeatedly witness the narcissist callously sabotaging the relationship, and making it seem like a chore or inconvenience to them.

Then, you learn that narcissists cannot move beyond the infatuation phase, which in reality was just a cunningly executed ploy to lure you into their lives. Incredibly, it dawns on you that they are shallow and superficial and incapable of real love and healthy bonding. The hardest part for you to admit is that it all was just a game to them. The narcissist kept you around and strung you along under false pretenses, while investing the bare minimum. The entire relationship was a lie filled with a lot of deception on their part. The narcissist that you were in a relationship with, never had the intension of moving the relationship forward and never will, because they are incapable of doing so.

Once you have reached this realization, you can finally stop longing for what you never had, and you are ready to move on. Nothing about the relationship was real. It was all fake. They never really loved you.

The arts of seduction and flirtation are the oldest in the world.

If you're having trouble dating (and we could all use some help with dating), here are some speed seduction techniques that will put you on the path to becoming a pick-up artist. Learn the basics to flirting, dating, and seducing anyone you desire:

Establish Rapport and Interest

--Mirroring

Pick-up artists understand that most of our communication is established through body language. As you mirror someone's body language, it will be subconsciously picked up (by the other person) that you have the same internal state (emotions, beliefs, ideas, patterns).

Remember, this is not an exercise in mimicry. Do not repeat their gestures and body language exactly, but close enough so that he/she can subconsciously pick it up.

The pick-up artist will remember which gestures express specific internal states and will mirror them to increase the subject's level of comfort and sexual excitement.

--Maintain Eye Contact

Eye contact shows interest and confidence. It is a key element in flirtation. You don't have to stare the person down, but make sure that they know you're there. --Elicit Their Values

Causing the subject to qualify themselves (example: "What are your best three qualities, besides your beauty?") has major effects in the speed seduction process:

1. It shows the subject that you are interested in more than their physical appearance

2. Demonstrating that their physical beauty does not control you, but that you are in control of yourself.

3. Weeding out people that only rely on their physical beauty to get what they want (have no personality)

4. Displaying higher social value

5. Causing your date to become more submissive

6. Increasing your date's "buying temperature" (their level of sexual excitement)

7. Forcing them to flirt with you more, using their strongest asset (usually their physical beauty) to impress you and keep your attention

--Elicit Their Map of Internal Experience

When the pickup artist asks about their date's (most intense) experiences, the person will give away their keywords to recall the experiences. These keywords are linked to their physical and emotional states.

The pickup artist links those states to himself by describing his own experiences with his date's keywords.



Pickup artists use these keywords (in combination with touch) to escalate the subject's state, sexual excitement, and "buying temperature."

Displaying Higher Social Value

There are several techniques in speed seduction to display social value, but the important thing is to make sure that you don't come off as bragging or arrogant. Keep a humorous attitude (known as Cocky and Funny).

--False Time Constraint

Essentially, let the person know that you're busy, have several other options, and don't have much time to be with them. "My friends and I were going to hit the ____ bar in a bit, but I thought I'd take some time to chat up some beautiful people until ____ ". This will bring your date's automatic guard down.

--Maintain a Relaxed Posture

It is important to control and be aware of your body language when dating and seducing. You've seen those movies where beautiful people enter the room and everything goes slow motion. As you walk, move in a relaxed and slow gait.

Remember this attitude: you have nowhere special to be, except for where you are, because that is where everything happens anyway.

--Use Negs and Takeaways

A "neg" is NOT an insult; it is a backhanded compliment. It could even imply (and usually does) that you have little sexual interest your date. Kino

Kino is speed seduction lingo for kinesthetic (touch or physical). Touching is extremely important in flirting and dating.

The pickup artist touches with broad, brushing motions, rather than pointed, jabby ones. If your date is resistant, touch areas that are rarely touched in a sexual way. Your date will have no negatives experience attached to those areas of their body.

The pickup artist always uses kino when their date is in a positive state. This is called "anchoring." Activate this anchor throughout the date to recall that positive emotion simply by touching them in the same way.

The ABC

Always Be Closing. In the art of speed seduction, if you're not moving for your next objective (escalating), then you're being left behind. If you're thinking "should I ____", then you're too late.

Do it already! It might feel awkward the first few times (and trust me, they can sense it), but the more practice you have, the smoother you'll be. At that point, they'll have no choice but to share the experience with you.

Remember: Two steps forward, One step back

Keep these speed seduction basics in mind, and I guarantee you that the art of seducing, flirting with, and dating a potential mate will be much easier. Surfers block Hawaii Superferry - ABC News

Hundreds of protesters on surfboards, swimming in the harbor and lining the docks held the Hawaii Superferry at bay for nearly two hours yesterday at Nawiliwili Harbor on Kaua'i, setting the stage for a legal showdown in a Maui courtroom this morning.

The U.S. Coast Guard used force to secure waters around the harbor where swimmers and surfers created a human blockade that had prevented the Superferry's 350-foot-long vessel, the Alakai, from entering the harbor.

The clash came as the beleaguered Hawaii Superferry launched its inaugural service yesterday with $5, one-way fares that attracted more than 2,200 passengers.

Kaua'i swimmers and surfers, cheered on by nearly 300 protesters on shore, occupied the middle of the harbor channel and turned back the Superferry.

At least 34 people swam out into the path of the ferry during the late afternoon. They stayed until three Coast Guard rigid-hulled inflatables, with a Coast Guard cutter standing by, began powering between the swimmers and surfers, appearing to charge at individual swimmers, taking one surfer's board and apparently trying to haul some of the group out of the water.

"They had a hook," said one female surfer. "I splashed them, and they told me that was illegal. They tried to hook me, but I paddled away as fast as I could."

Some of the protesters were arrested, but it was not known how many.

Increasing tensions

Earlier, the ferry backed out of the harbor about 6 p.m. after a half-hour standoff with 16 swimmers and surfers during which only a single Coast Guard vessel was present. As people on shore cheered and chanted slogans, the ferry remained on station a half-mile outside the harbor.

A second Coast Guard boat left the Coast Guard Station at 6:30 p.m. and a third about 6:45 p.m. During the same period, more and more people from shore began swimming and paddling into the harbor. The boats moved among the surfers, photographing them and telling them to leave.

"They (told us) that we needed to leave," said swimmer James Gerard Trujillo.

"I was saying to them, protect our waters. I told them I had a right to be here," said Pua La'a. She said she had to repeatedly dive to keep from being grabbed by officers.

Surfer Dennis Chun said he tried to tell Coast Guard officers that the group was acting in defense of the Hawai'i Supreme Court, which ruled last week that the Superferry needed an environmental assessment.

About 150 people had been holding signs and participating in a rally during the afternoon, but the crowd grew as the time for the ferry arrival approached. By about 5:30 p.m., with the ferry visible on the horizon outside Nawiliwili Harbor, more than 200 people, many with anti-ferry signs, lined the end of the Nawiliwili Jetty, and nearly 100 more milled up and down the road leading to the jetty. Soon, swimmers and surfers began swimming out to the harbor ship channel.

As the ferry came in, about 16 men and women were in the water, holding position. The ferry stopped in the harbor's outer channel. A Coast Guard boat patrolled, but the swimmers did not leave. About 6 p.m., as its passengers crowded against an upper deck railing to watch, the big ship backed out of the harbor, until it appeared to be about a half-mile outside the entrance.

"Push 'em back, way back," the crowd chanted.

CANBERRA/TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Australian counterpart Tony Abbott on Tuesday signed an economic partnership pact as well as an agreement on military equipment and technology transfers, a week after Abe loosened curbs on Japan's military.

Earlier Abe told Australia's parliament that the two nations were launching a "special relationship" of cooperation on areas such as defence after putting aside any lingering enmity from World War Two.

Abe, warily eying China's rapid military buildup and more assertive claims to islands held by Japan in the East China Sea, has been courting governments from Canberra to Southeast Asia in recent months. China is Australia's largest trading partner.

"The door for dialogue is always open from the Japanese side so I do sincerely hope that the Chinese side also take the same posture," Abe told a press conference after signing the Japan-Australian Economic Partnership Agreement.

"China along with Japan and Australia should play a greater role for peace and prosperity in the Asia Pacific region," he said.

The military deal "will make the first cut engraving the special relationship in our future", Abe earlier told a joint parliamentary session, the first such speech by a Japanese leader.

Mirroring a partnership concluded with Britain a year ago, it will establish a framework for industrial cooperation that could pave the way for a deal on building a fleet of stealth submarines for Australia.

Abe has been forging a more assertive defence and security posture in his year-and-a-half in office.

In April, he eased a four-decade ban on military exports, which could allow Japan to ship submarine components or even completed vessels to Australia.

A week ago, Abe's cabinet reinterpreted the pacifist constitution to allow Japan's military to defend friendly nations under attack..

"As a nation that longs for permanent peace in the world, and as a country whose economy is among the biggest, Japan is now determined to do more to enhance peace in the region and peace in the world," said Abe.

ABBOTT HAILS STRATEGIC PARTNER

Abbott hailed the Japanese leader's pledge to build a more robust military. "For decades now Japan has been an exemplary international citizen, so Australia welcomes Japan's recent decision to be a more capable strategic partner in our region," he told parliament before Abe spoke.

Australia is looking for partners to build a fleet of 4,000 ton-class quiet-running diesel-electric subs to help extend its maritime surveillance deep into the Indian Ocean. Their presence could also help Japan keep better tabs on Chinese activity.

The United States, which is also closely allied with Australia, has also welcomed Abe's shift, saying it would make the U.S.-Japan alliance more effective.

Abe has sent his defence minister, Itsunori Onodera, to Washington to discuss the changes.

China, which says Japan has failed to atone for its wartime aggression and is seeking to whitewash history, has been sharply critical of Abe's moves.

Speaking at an event on Monday to commemorate the 77th anniversary of a skirmish that sparked war with Japan, Chinese President Xi Jinping condemned Japan's wartime atrocities and criticised those who "who ignore reality, move against the tide of history".

The Love-Hate Relationship between the English and the Irish

This is an overall view of the history of the English invasion in Ireland and its long lasting effect.


Things You Will Need

The situation existing today in Ireland started a long time ago which many people don't realize and know about it.



The love-hate relationship between the English and the Irish began in 1172 when King Henry II became Ireland's overlord.

In the 12th century there were five main kingdoms in Ireland. The problem started when they supposed to chose a High King between the kingdoms of Connaught, Ulster, Meath, Leinster and Munster. The rivalry built up so badly that the King of Leinster asked help from Earl of Pembroke (known as Strongbow). He was a great Norman lord. In exchange he promised his daughter in wedlock. and his kingdom which was her inheritance.

Strongbow conquered Ireland in 1172. He was so successful that King Henry II got jealous of his fame. Strongbow, as promised by the King of Leinster did marry his daughter and inherit the kingdom. King Henry II made Strongbow hand over all his conquests, including his Kingdom of Leinster but not his wife, and set himself up as Ireland overlord.

That is the time when today's trouble really started. The Norman and English settlers tried to introduce their ways. The kingdoms and customs were too deep in the hearts of the Irish people and after all it was their land and country. There were many uprising and troubles. If somebody wanted to cause trouble in England received a great support from Ireland. The Pale, a fortified areas around Dublin were the only place where the English ruled properly.

In the following years the English kings had to subdue the Irish people several time. King John had two attempts. The second time in 1210 was successful. He built the Dublin Castle after that. However, he made fun of the Irish about their old-fashioned clothes and long beards. A loathing against the English king began.

In 1394 Richard II sailed to Ireland and stayed there for eight months trying to keep 'his' Irish subjects down. 80 chiefs paid him homage in Dublin as Lord of Ireland. In spite of this the uprising started again. In spite of that Richard's influence was to remain in introducing the trousers, stirrups and eat at separate tables from their servants.

When the Tudors ruled Ireland sheltered two pretenders or claimants to the throne. Lambert Simnel who was crowned in Dublin as King of England and Perkin Warbeck. King Henry VII introduced the English laws in Ireland and the Irish Parliament had to ask for permission to introduce its own laws.

Henry VIII tried to turn Ireland into Protestant. He dissolution half its monasteries and confiscated the rebels estates. He did not succeed because there was not enough money either to maintain his status as the King of Ireland and a full army to keep discipline.



Elisabeth I had to deal with four rebellions in Ireland. The King of Spain gave his support. Elisabeth sent her favourite the Earl of Essex in 1598 to stop a new rebellion. He lost 1300 English Soldiers in the Battle of Yellow Ford. After that he sided with the rebels and led a rebellion of his own again the Queen. He was executed. In 1603 they managed to crush the revolt and in the same year Queen Elizabeth died.

The Irish people kept on being rebellious under the Stuarts. After revolt of the northern earls in 1609, James I decided to throw off the Irish families of their land in Ulster and replacing them with thousand of English and Scottish Protestants. Settlers from London gave the settlement the name of Londonderry. This was the start of a majority of Protestant living in Ulster.

During a great uprising 3000 English settlers were killed in 1641. Charles I needed a big army to put down the rebellion. The Parliament refused and it caused a confrontation between the King and Parliament. It developed into a civil war and the Irish back Charles. However, when Charles was defeated Oliver Cromwell went to Ireland and wreaked a terrible vengeance. He killed the people of Wexford and Drogheda in 1649 and today his name is detested in Ireland.

Catholicism was always strong in Ireland. It this religion which persuaded the Irish people to side with James II which was dethroned at that time. James II got an army together of French and Irish men to regain his throne. They were defeated at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690 by the English king William of Orange. It is this battle which is celebrated by the protestant Orangemen every year.




I do hope I gave a comprehensive account of the history how today's trouble started. I can hear people saying but that it was hundreds of years ago and not worth anymore to kill or to be killed for. Scarlett Johansson and Sean Penn are no longer dating, a source tells PEOPLE.

Speculation about the pair began after Johansson did not attend the Cannes Film Festival with Penn for his movie The Tree of Life. She has been working on The Avengers in New Mexico, reprising her role of Black Widow from Iron Man 2.

Johansson, 26, and Penn, 50, made headlines when they took a whirlwind trip to Cabo San Lucas after being spotted getting flirty together during a lunch date in Los Angeles.

The pair attended a White House Correspondents' Dinner party in Washington D.C. in April and had been spotted in a series of cozy outings in L.A.



The reason for the split wasn't immediately known. Reps declined to comment.

Commensalism is a type of symbiotic relationship where one party benefits and the other party is not significantly affected - either positively or negatively. Symbiotic relationships always refer to the interactions between different species and there are many examples of commensal relationships in the ocean. Described here are just a few examples of marine commensal relationships.

Commensal Barnacles Live on Turtles and Whales

Barnacles are arthropods, closely related to crabs and lobsters, often found fixed to rocky surfaces in inter-tidal zones. However, some species of commensal barnacles make their living by affixing themselves to other animals such as turtles or whales. The non-profit Journey North writes in their article " Hitchhikers: Free Rides on Grey Whales " that barnacles benefit from living on whales. As the whales travel the barnacles gain access to nutrient-rich waters, yet their host neither benefits nor is harmed by its riders. Barnacles riding on sea turtles display a similar commensalist relationship. Leandro Bugoni et al. write in the 2001 Marine Turtle Newsletter article "Commensal Barnacles of Sea Turtles in Brazil" that there are several species of barnacles living in a commensal relationship with green and loggerhead turtles.

Commensal Relationships are Common in Sponges

Stacie Crowe writes in the July 28 2002 NOAA article "Sponge Commensals" that sponges are like marine hotels. Sponges are animals and a home to crustaceans and worms that do not affect the host. Depending on the sponge's size and shape, a single sponge can house a few or several hundred commensal species. Crowe writes that sponges make an excellent host as they provide their commensal organisms with a safe home and nutrients to feed on.

Remoras and Sharks May Have a Commensalist Relationship

The University of Michigan Museum of Zoology writes in the article "Remora remora" that this sucking fish has a commensal relationship with sharks, and sometimes sea turtles. Again the host is not affected negatively or positively. The remora uses a sucking disk on the top of its head to catch a ride on its host and detaches itself to eat its host's food scraps. Some scientists suggest that the remora-shark relationship is actually a mutualistic one where both species benefit. Some remoras will eat parasites off of their host, thus benefiting the host.

Classifying Commensal Relationships



The term commensalism helps scientists understand the relationships between various species. However, humanity's knowledge of commensal relationships is not set in stone. For a long time it was believed that the clownfish-anemone relationship was commensalistic until benefits were discovered for both parties. As naturalists continue to observe species interactions, they may have to reclassify relationships as mutualistic or parasitic as benefits and impairments are discovered.

Since trust in a relationship must be tended to on an ongoing basis, you should use these tips not just to build trust but also to maintain it once it's established.

For your partner to trust you requires her to take a leap of faith. Once she does, you must follow up with constant reinforcement to prove her trust in you is not misplaced. For our purposes we'll assume she is worthy of your trust. If not, that would be the subject of a completely different article.

Risa Davis-Ganel is a Licensed Clinical Marriage and Family Therapist in private practice in Maryland, and also happens to be my wife. In her work with couples, every day Risa encounters cases where relationships are in breakdown. A major part of the therapy process is helping these couples recover the trust and relatedness they've lost. I spoke with Risa about trust in a relationship. The names below are made up, but their stories illustrate how easily trust can be lost.

Top tip #1 to build trust in relationships: don't lie to your partner

This seems like a no-brainer, but it turns out to be much harder to follow than you'd expect. People have many reasons to lie, and find many ways to justify their lying. "It was just a white lie" or "she isn't always truthful either" can be two examples. Being caught in a lie is a trust-killer. Be truthful even when it's uncomfortable and you'll avoid this pitfall.

Jack and Molly's relationship suffered a major setback when Molly found out Jack lied to her. He was supposed to do the couple's shopping, but said he couldn't because he had to go in to work. Molly saw him at a book store sipping coffee and reading. Jack was there alone, but Molly is now afraid she can't trust him to tell her the truth about anything.

Top tip #2 to build trust in relationships: be trustworthy in your words and actions

Perhaps you find yourself constantly late to dates with your partner. Your partner may feel this means the relationship is not a priority for you. No matter how many times you say that your tardiness just shows poor time management, each time it happens, you have a harder time convincing her.

In situations like this you need to reflect on why you're always late. If it's a matter of carelessness, start caring. If it's losing yourself in the task at hand, set an alarm. If it's a deeper reason, perhaps it's time to seek help for your relationship.

In a relationship you want to enhance trust and support it at every turn. By telling your partner what you will do and then doing it you reassure her that you can be trusted.

"If your partner asks if you're OK with something and you're not, say so" says Risa. "If you hide it, you may become resentful, causing bigger problems later on. If your partner can't trust what you tell him, how can he trust you?"

Kevin and Sarah are rebuilding their trust in each other. Kevin says Sarah wasn't straight with him when he asked if she minded his spending time with his buddies watching football on TV. Whenever he'd go out for an evening with the guys, he says, he'd come home to the silent treatment.



Sarah is struggling to be honest with Kevin about how she feels. She doesn't want to come between him and his friends, but she's afraid that when Kevin spends his "fun" time with friends, their own relationship loses out.

Once Sarah expressed her emotions honestly they were able to come up with a solution. They began scheduled dates with each other again to liven up their routine. Fun is not a zero-sum game. Kevin can have fun with his buddies as well as with his wife.

As mentioned above, we're assuming your partner is worthy of your trust. This being the case, trust her. Don't let jealousy drive you to spy on her, expecting to catch her out. If you do you'll begin misconstruing innocent things she says, does, doesn't say, or doesn't do as proof she's not trustworthy. You'll drive yourself crazy with doubt over the relationship, ultimately sabotaging it.

Even if you never make a comment about something you aren't supposed to know, and never get caught where you aren't supposed to be, your distrust of her will color how you relate and the relationship will suffer. Communicate by word and deed that you trust her, especially after an argument, as that's when the relationship is most at risk.

I constantly reminded her how great a therapist she is, and how much of a difference she makes in her clients' lives. I reassured her that we would get through the setbacks and things would work out. This gave Risa the space to trust herself and take the risks needed to grow her practice. As a result, her practice developed twice as quickly as expected, and our relationship was strengthened.

"Once an issue has been resolved, let it be" Risa says. "Don't reopen old wounds just to score points in an argument. How you fight with each other is one of the predictors of the expected longevity of your relationship."

Sam seems to constantly bring up the time Dave put her down in front of his family. It was a holiday meal and he'd had a little too much to drink. Although Dave apologized afterwards many times, and has done everything he can to show her how much he appreciates and loves her, it seems that each argument they have brings out the old hurt. If Sam doesn't stop using this as a weapon in their spats, it threatens their relationship.

All relationships have ups and downs. When you have a disagreement, don't stonewall your partner. Let him know what's hurting you. When you do talk, don't use sarcasm and name calling. If you can come out of a fight with neither of you feeling you've been mauled by the other emotionally, your relationship is likely to endure.

Always look at how your actions and words may affect your partner. When you change course in something significant, discuss it ahead of time. This will help your partner anticipate the changes and maintain an even keel in the relationship.
